Everything you need to know before booking a proof load test

Find answers to common questions about Cookes × JWA water load testing. This page covers how water load bags work, when proof load testing is legally required in New Zealand, what documentation and certificates are issued, and the practical considerations involved in planning, measuring, and delivering a proof load test. Whether you're managing a crane fleet, planning a five-year marine survey, or assessing a civil or industrial structure, use this page to understand the method, the compliance context, and what to expect from a Cookes-delivered job.

  1. What is the mobilisation process?

    arrow

Bags are transported to site empty, rigged into position, filled on-site, used for the test, then emptied and removed. Mobilisation planning depends on the required proof load, site access, water availability, drainage, and any supporting equipment or instrumentation. We confirm the full mobilisation plan at scope stage so there are no surprises on the day.

  2. What happens if the test reveals a problem?

    arrow

If the asset does not pass the proof load test — for example, if abnormal deformation, unexpected movement, or a functional failure is observed - the test is stopped and the asset is not returned to service. The result is documented, including what was observed and at what load. From there, the competent person and the PCBU responsible for the asset decide on the appropriate next steps: further inspection, engineering assessment, repair, or retirement from service. Cookes can assist with the inspection, engineering review, and — where the asset is repaired - the subsequent re-test. The asset is not returned to service on assumption alone.

  3. Is there a minimum hire period?

    arrow

Minimum hire period depends on the equipment required, site location, and testing scope. This is confirmed at quotation stage.

  4. How is pricing structured?

    arrow

Pricing is based on the full job scope, not just a day rate for the bag. It typically reflects the equipment required, the test load, mobilisation and travel, site access constraints, technicians, reporting, instrumentation, and overall job complexity. Contact us with your job details for a scope-based quote.

  5. What does rental include?

    arrow

Rental generally covers the water load testing equipment required for the job. Freight, technician time, calibrated instrumentation, servicing, and additional equipment may be priced separately depending on the scope. This is confirmed at quotation stage.

  6. Can Cookes supply calibrated load cells

    arrow

Yes. Calibrated load cells and load measuring equipment are part of the standard testing setup. Calibration must be current on the day of the test. If you have specific instrumentation requirements - for example, a class society or insurer requirement for a particular accuracy class - confirm this at enquiry stage.
